BAROQUE YES :)
Minimalism.
Only with humour.
No black and white.
Noise is easy.
Infrastructure too.
ONE RULE: Collect.
Collect.
Collect.
A LOT.
ADD DIRECTION.
Abstract & Specific.
Global & Situated.
High-res & Low-res.
Infinite zoom.
Multiple dimensions.
Doors, windows, connections.
Tell a story.
MAKE A WORLD.
Use everything.
Especially what you don't know.
Probabilities, not certainties.
A smell.
A sound.
A voice.
A bit dirty.
Almost bad taste.
No moralising.
No explanations.
A bit provocative.
A bit pushy.
Smart.
Differently.
TOO MUCH.
ON PURPOSE.
WHAT DO WE DO?
0MORE is a design studio at Studio 2, Universität Innsbruck. When machines can do anything, what do we do? We think. We begin with a character, a theme and a location, make them collide, and keep translating — text, image, scene, code, prompt, model, film, building — until the project starts to speak back. Architecture is never only an object. It is the stories, conflicts, desires and systems that make the object possible. We don't design solutions. We make worlds.
TEXTS, MOVIES, MODELS
Studio0MORE uses artificial intelligence to deal with and articulate online information in large quantities. We write TEXTS to constitute our projects. We create MOVIES to temper them. We develop MODELS to enact them. We navigate all media to weave a sophisticated, multi-layered cosmos around our projects. We call all of this ARCHITECTURE. Today's connected world asks the architect to be a digitally literate persona, nimble in addressing the ideas that challenge the world on a global scale — in the same manner as the 2,000-year-old tradition of architectural treatises demands of itself.
A COLLISION
Every semester starts with a collision. Anthony Bourdain gets one block of Mong Kok and 300 square metres to host whoever shows up. William of Baskerville, the monk from The Name of the Rose, moves to San José to discuss laughter with Silicon Valley. Pier Paolo Pasolini is given a plot in Mumbai for two years and four rules: save something, destroy something, bring something, give something. The gods — Zeus, Buddha, Freya, Apollo and the Oracle of Delphi — are invited to design a pantheon for a Buddhist retreat under the Alps. A character introduces a theme; a theme occupies a location; a location becomes a scene. From the first day there is a world, and the project is whatever that world needs.
TRANSLATE
Then we translate. A scene is an image; an image becomes a text; a text is a code; a code becomes a prompt; a prompt returns as a text. Students write 1,500 words with thirty references before they draw. They cut a three-minute trailer before they model. They give their building a name that is not a description but a soul — Nifty Nook, Tashi Gfü — and, sooner or later, a Pokémon card. The instruments are ours: Alice for books, search0more for models and textures, Paradiso for films, and whichever large model is best this week. The models come and go; the collection stays.
ONE ARGUMENT, TWO DATASETS
The mechanics underneath is one argument and two datasets. The argument is what you believe — the one thing nobody can render for you. Dataset one is everything you love: houses, texts, films, songs, objects. Dataset two is for whom and how it should look. Everything in between is rendering, and rendering is cheap now. What is rare is direction. So the studio is not a course in software and not a course in prompting. It is a place to find out what you actually want to say to the world, and to say it ten times, in ten media, until it holds.
ABUNDANCE WITH A FACE
We collect too much, on purpose. Noise is easy and infrastructure is easy; both always look good and neither is an idea. Abundance has to be given a direction and a face: an angle, a temperament, a smell. Our projects are abstract and specific at the same time — a question about religion, pollution or the synthetic, and a plot with coordinates. They are global and situated: Hong Kong, San José, Mumbai, Scharnstein, Nanjing. They work at every resolution: a screenshot and a 30-ton wall, a spreadsheet and a sundial.
THEN APOLLO APPEARS
At some point the world needs drawings, a structural engineer, formwork, a roof, money and a client who is a Buddhist community with opinions. In 2024 nineteen students designed, financed and built two rammed-earth meditation pavilions in one year: thirty tons of earth rammed by hand, a roof donated by a farm-building company that believed the story, copper donated by another, a crowdfunding stopped by the university, nineteen students at the start and nineteen at the end. The stories convinced the sponsors before the drawings did. That is the point: objects are worth as much as the stories you can tell about them.
HOW WE WORK
We are not control freaks. Decisions get made on site, by the people who are there. Reviews are long, with guests who disagree. Humour is a method, not a decoration. Nothing is moralised, nothing is explained away, and the mood is dirty optimism: we know the problems and we play anyway. The prediploma turns this into a question you set yourself; the diploma into a world you can defend. Bring a character.
THE GOALS
Identify and construct an understanding of today's technologies.
Develop methodologies to design architecture with an abundance of online information.
Perform delicate balances between Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence.
Assess the importance of being a digitally literate architect today.
